The phrase build a searchable library sounds like a project. It suggests barcodes, spreadsheets, metadata, categories, and a weekend disappearing into data entry. That is unnecessary if the actual goal is much narrower: when you want a book later, be able to find the shelf where it lives.

Start by refusing to catalog anything
Do not begin with a list of books. Do not pull books off the shelf. Do not reorganize. Do not type authors or ISBNs.
Open Shelf Scan's Library, tap the add button, choose Capture new, and photograph the shelves as they already are. Shelf Scan recognizes visible text in the image and stores the capture so that text can be searched later.
The important unit is not the book. It is the photograph.
Take pictures shelf by shelf, or case by case
The fastest useful pass is simple: stand squarely in front of a shelf, take a picture in which the spine text is reasonably readable, save it, move to the next section, and repeat.
If one photograph of an entire bookcase makes the titles tiny, move closer and take two or three. The aim is not photographic beauty. It is legible spine text.
A normal home library does not need studio lighting. Avoid obvious glare, hold the phone reasonably steady, and keep moving. Shelf Scan's own guidance is the same: sharper text and softer light make recognition easier.
Descriptions are optional
Shelf Scan lets a saved image have a description. Use one only when it saves future thought. study left wall, hallway, or upstairs fiction can be useful because the result then tells you where to walk.
There is no need to number every shelf or invent a classification scheme. The photograph already contains the visual context. A short room label is usually enough.
Do not stop to perfect bad shelves
If one shelf is dark, highly reflective, or packed with sideways books, take the best reasonable picture and continue. The first pass should optimize for coverage, not perfection.
You can always replace one weak capture later. The worst outcome is turning a ten-minute job into an afternoon because one awkward shelf became a photography problem.
Test the Library with one book you know is there
After the shelves are captured, search for a distinctive author or title word from a book you can see. Shelf Scan searches recognized text across every saved image. If the result appears, open the image and zoom or pan until you can see the book's neighbors.
That test is more useful than reviewing every capture one by one. The system exists to answer a retrieval question, so test retrieval.
The Library does not need to become a maintenance burden
A shelf photo can remain useful even after a few books move. It still narrows the search to the right room or case, and surrounding books provide visual context.
Retake a picture after a major rearrangement, when enough titles have changed that the old image becomes misleading, or when you happen to be handling that shelf anyway. There is no reason to rescan the collection every time one new book arrives.
Ten minutes buys a surprisingly large amount of retrieval
A catalog can answer many questions that a shelf photograph cannot. It can support a definitive inventory, detailed metadata, insurance records, valuation, and precise collection management.
But if the recurring problem is simply where did I put that book?, a searchable set of shelf photos may solve most of the problem for a fraction of the setup cost. The collection stays exactly where it is. The phone just acquires a searchable visual memory of it.
