Double-shelving is what happens when the number of books and the number of linear feet stop negotiating. A second row goes in front of the first. Capacity improves immediately. Retrieval does not.

The usual advice is to catalog everything and record a location for every title. That works, but it creates a surprisingly large maintenance obligation for what is often a simple physical problem: half the books are hidden behind the other half. A lighter system is to make each layer searchable while it is visible.

Search the front row normally

If the book you want may be in the visible row, Shelf Scan can search it in Live Mode. Enter an author, title word, series name, or other distinctive term and pan the camera across the spines. Matches are highlighted as the camera sees them, with an optional tone if listening for the hit is easier than watching the screen continuously.

This is the easy half of the case. The more interesting question is what to do with the books behind it.

When the back row is exposed, photograph it

The moment the front row comes off a shelf, the hidden row becomes unusually valuable information. Before putting anything back, take a clear photograph of the exposed spines and save it to Shelf Scan's Library. Then photograph the front row separately once it is restored.

Those two images can represent one physical shelf without pretending that the shelf has only one layer. Descriptions such as study case 2 shelf 4 back and study case 2 shelf 4 front are enough. They are not catalog records. They are addresses.

For a densely packed shelf, closer photographs are generally more useful than one wide image. If the lettering is too small for a person to read comfortably on the captured image, OCR is being asked to rescue a poor photograph. Give it a better one instead.

Search both rows later from the Library

Once both layers have been photographed, the phone can search text recognized across the saved images. A match in the back-row image tells you something ordinary memory often cannot: the book is not merely “probably in the study.” It is behind the front row on a particular shelf.

The photograph supplies another kind of location data as well. The target may be beside a red Everyman's Library volume, under an oversized book, or three books to the right of a distinctive white spine. That surrounding visual context is often more useful in a private library than a formal call number would be.

Do not make the hidden row too expensive to reach

A search system cannot fix a shelf that is physically impossible to use. If retrieving one back-row book requires moving twenty unstable piles, the real problem is access rather than indexing.

Double-shelving works best when the front row can be removed in manageable groups and put back without reconstructing the bookcase. Very tall books, fragile editions, and books used constantly are poor candidates for the back. The hidden layer is better for material that needs to be findable without needing to be instantly reachable.

You do not need to update every photo after every book moves

A photographic shelf record is useful precisely because it is cheap. Do not turn it into a brittle inventory that must be synchronized after every purchase.

If one or two books move, the image may still tell you the correct shelf and layer. Retake the photo after a substantial rearrangement, when a row has changed enough that the old visual context is misleading, or when you already have the back row exposed for another reason.

There is also no requirement that every shelf use the same method. Frequently used shelves may stay single-row and need no saved image. A particularly overfilled case may benefit from front and back photographs. The least annoying system that reliably answers where is the book? is usually the right one.

Use Live Mode when you are there, the Library when you are not

The two Shelf Scan modes fit double-shelving unusually well. Live Mode handles the visible spines in front of you. Saved Library images preserve the hidden layer so you do not have to expose it merely to discover whether the book is there.

The method is not a definitive inventory. OCR can miss stylized, tiny, reflective, or obscured text, and a book absent when the photograph was taken will be absent from the search. But for a normal private collection, it can turn the back row from a memory test into a place that can actually be searched.
