There is a particular stage in the life of a home library when memory stops being a reliable index. A book is definitely somewhere in the house. Its cover may even be easy to picture. The problem is whether it is in the study, behind another row of books, on the tall case in the hall, or three shelves from where anyone remembers putting it.
A complete catalog can solve this, but cataloging every book is a great deal of work if the recurring question is simply where is the book? Shelf Scan takes a more literal approach: it reads the text already printed on the spines. The useful thing to know is that it has two different ways to do that, and they suit two different situations.
If you are standing in front of the shelves, use Live Mode
Live Mode is for the immediate search. Open Shelf Scan, enter a word you expect to appear on the spine, and point the camera at the shelves. As the camera moves across readable text, matches are highlighted on the screen. An optional match tone can give an audible cue, which is useful when the shelves are dense enough that watching every highlighted box becomes tedious.
The search term does not have to be a perfect title. If the book is The Master and Margarita, Bulgakov may be easier. For an edition of Montaigne, Montaigne is more useful than trying to remember the exact subtitle. A distinctive word is often enough.
Live Mode works especially well when memory has already narrowed the problem: the book is probably in this room, or on these three cases, but visually scanning hundreds of spines is slower than having the camera look for one word.
Move deliberately. Spine text is much easier to recognize when the camera is steady and glare is not washing out the lettering. Shelf Scan does its OCR on the device, so this does not depend on a network connection.
If the collection itself is the problem, photograph it for the Library
A different problem appears when the books are spread across several rooms, or when the collection is simply too large to remember where to start looking. Walking around the house with Live Mode every time would work, but it throws away the most reusable part of the effort: the fact that the shelves can be photographed once.
Shelf Scan's Library keeps saved shelf images and makes their recognized text searchable later. From the Library, add a shelf by taking a new photo. Existing shelf photos can also be imported from the phone's gallery. The practical aim is not beautiful photography; it is readable spines.
For a large bookcase, several closer images are usually more useful than one heroic photograph of the entire wall. Keep the phone roughly square to the books, avoid glare, and make the lettering large enough that a human could comfortably read most of it on the screen. If books are double-shelved, photograph the front row and the row behind it when it becomes exposed. The camera cannot search a title it cannot see.
Descriptions can do a little extra work where the physical geography matters. A label such as study north wall or upstairs fiction is enough to turn a matching image into directions. There is no need to invent a formal classification system merely because a text field exists.
Then search the photographs instead of the house
Once the shelves are in the Library, the search changes character. Instead of deciding which room to inspect and then pointing the camera at it, search across the saved images first. Shelf Scan can search the recognized text across the Library and surface the images that contain a match. Open the result, zoom if needed, and use the surrounding books as visual context for where to look physically.
That context is one reason shelf photographs are surprisingly useful. A database record might say that a book is in “Study B3.” A photograph can show that it is beside the black Oxford edition and underneath the oversized art books. For a collection whose arrangement makes sense to the people who live with it but would horrify a cataloger, that may be the better address.
The Library is also useful when the search happens somewhere else. The saved images live on the phone, so the shelves can be searched while away from home. This is the same basic trick behind checking whether a suspiciously familiar book in a bookstore is already in the collection.
Use both modes; they solve different parts of the same failure
There is no reason to choose one system for the whole library. A useful pattern is to photograph the major shelves so the Library can tell you where to begin, then use Live Mode when you are standing in front of a particularly crowded case.
The saved Library does not need constant maintenance. Retake a shelf after a major rearrangement or when enough books have changed that the old image has become misleading. Stable shelves can remain useful for a long time. Shelf Scan can also export the Library as a ZIP backup, which is worth doing occasionally if the photographed collection took real effort to build.
There are limits. OCR can miss tiny, stylized, reflective, obscured, or badly photographed lettering. A book that was in a stack, in a box, lent out, or simply absent when the photo was taken will not magically appear in the results. If the job requires a definitive inventory for insurance, valuation, or rare-book management, use a real catalog.
For the ordinary and much more frequent problem of knowing a book is around somewhere, however, the shelves already contain most of the information needed to find it. Shelf Scan lets the phone read that information either now, through the camera, or later, through the photographs already saved.
