A shelf can look perfectly readable to a person and still be a bad OCR image.
Human vision is very good at filling in partial letters, recognizing familiar title designs, and mentally correcting for glare, angle, and shadows. OCR has a simpler problem: it needs a sharp enough image of the actual letters.
That means the best bookshelf photo is not necessarily the prettiest one. It is the one that makes the spine text easiest to read.
Get close enough to the text
The most common mistake is trying to fit too much shelf into one photograph.
If you have a six-foot shelf full of narrow paperbacks, several closer photos will usually be more useful than one heroic image of the entire bookcase. The farther away the camera is, the less image detail is available to describe each small letter.
A practical test is simple. Open the image at normal size on the phone and look at the smallest spine you care about. If the title is difficult for you to read without zooming, it is asking a lot from OCR too.
Keep the camera roughly square to the shelf
A slight angle is fine. A severe angle makes text narrower, changes letter shapes, and gives one end of the shelf much less detail than the other.
Stand far enough back to keep the phone approximately parallel with the row of spines. If the shelves are above or below eye level, tilt only as much as necessary rather than photographing the row from a dramatic diagonal.
This matters especially with tall shelves. A photograph taken from floor level toward the top of a bookcase may capture everything, but the upper titles can become small trapezoids. Move the phone to the height of the shelf instead.
Sharpness matters more than the camera's headline resolution
A high-resolution camera cannot recover letters that were blurred during capture.
Bookshelves create several opportunities for blur: dim rooms, a moving hand, the camera focusing on the shelf edge rather than the text, or a very close shot that exceeds the lens's comfortable focus distance.
Hold still for a moment before taking a Library Mode image. If the phone is struggling to focus, move back slightly rather than pushing the lens against the books.
For Live Mode, move the camera steadily enough that titles have time to come into focus as you sweep. Racing across the row does not create more searchable shelf per second if every frame is blurry.
Use even light, not maximum light
More light is usually helpful because it allows a sharper image. Glare is not.
Glossy dust jackets and laminated spines can turn a ceiling light or window into a white stripe that erases several letters. If that happens, move the phone or the light source slightly until the reflection shifts away from the text.
Soft room light or indirect daylight is often easier than a direct flash. A flash can rescue a dark shelf, but on glossy books it may replace darkness with a bright hotspot.
Watch for deep shadows too. A shelf directly above the books can shade the upper part of every spine. Changing the camera height by a few inches may improve the text more than increasing exposure.
Decorative spines are genuinely harder
Some books simply provide bad OCR input.
Common troublemakers include:
- elaborate script typefaces
- extremely condensed lettering
- metallic or reflective titles
- very low contrast between text and background
- text printed over busy artwork
- curved or damaged spines
- titles hidden behind shelf lips, bookends, or neighboring volumes
- sideways and vertical text mixed closely together
Do not expect camera technique to make every design equally readable.
When one title matters, move closer, adjust the angle to remove glare, and capture it again. Shelf Scan searches visible text; it cannot infer a title that the image never makes legible.
Preserve enough shelf context to find the book again
For Library Mode, OCR accuracy is only half the job. The saved image is also your map back to the physical shelf.
Cropping tightly around three book spines may produce excellent text, but a month later you may not know where those three books were photographed. Leave enough neighboring books, shelf edges, or other visual context to recognize the location.
A useful Library Mode image therefore balances two goals:
- make the text large enough to recognize
- keep enough of the physical scene to recover the item's location
For a large library, that often means photographing one shelf section at a time and giving the saved image a description that identifies the room, case, shelf, or collection.
Test the image instead of admiring it
The fastest way to learn whether your shelf-photo method works is to search it.
After saving a Library Mode image, try several titles:
- one large, obvious title
- one ordinary paperback spine
- one of the smallest titles in the image
- one book near each edge of the frame
If the obvious title works but the narrow paperbacks do not, move closer next time. If one edge performs worse, straighten the angle. If glossy books fail, change the lighting.
A searchable shelf library does not need photography-school consistency. It needs a capture method that produces readable text often enough to be worth keeping.
For most shelves, the winning adjustment is also the least glamorous one: take more pictures from closer range.
