There is no useful answer like one photograph per 37 books.

The right number of shelf photos depends on two things: whether the text is large enough to read, and whether a successful match still tells you where the physical book is. A very wide photograph gives excellent location context but tiny spines. A very tight photograph gives OCR more pixels but may leave you staring at a match with no idea which bookcase it came from.

The useful unit is not the book. It is the searchable shelf section.

Photograph as much shelf as remains legible

Take one photograph of a shelf section, save it in Shelf Scan Library Mode, and search for several titles in the image. Test a large title near the center, a narrow paperback, a title near each edge, and a spine with small type.

If the obvious books work but the smaller spines do not, divide the shelf into two or three closer images. If all of them are easy to find, you may be able to cover a little more area per photograph.

Shelves differ enormously. Thirty large hardbacks may be easier for OCR than fifteen slim paperbacks with tiny vertical lettering.

More photos are cheap; unreadable photos are expensive

The maintenance cost of a saved photograph is small compared with the cost of a visual index that repeatedly fails to retrieve the titles inside it.

If one six-foot row requires three images to make the spine text comfortably readable, take three images. The point of Library Mode is to avoid item-by-item cataloging, so there is little reason to undermine that advantage by trying to compress an entire wall into two photographs.

A dozen useful shelf images are better than four impressive panoramas.

Give each image enough context to locate the match

When Shelf Scan highlights a match later, the saved image should also answer: Where is this?

Useful context may include the edge of the bookcase, a distinctive neighboring book, part of the shelf above or below, a visible divider, or a stable sequence of books around the target.

Library Mode lets you edit saved descriptions. Use those descriptions to encode location rather than subject when physical retrieval is the main job. Study — north wall — case 2 — shelf 4 is often more useful than History books because the photograph already shows what the books are.

Overlap only when it helps orientation

A small overlap can help when a long shelf is divided into sections because the repeated neighboring book makes it obvious how two images connect. Too much overlap simply creates duplicate OCR hits and extra images to scan.

If left half and right half already have clear descriptions and obvious physical boundaries, no overlap may be necessary.

Use physical structure as your batching scheme

The easiest plan usually follows the furniture: one to three images per shelf depending on text size, one description per shelf section, then repeat for each bookcase.

If a case has unusually wide shelves, divide them consistently into left/right or left/center/right sections. If some shelves contain oversized books with huge titles, one image may cover the whole row perfectly well.

Consistency is useful, but it should not become an obligation to photograph every shelf at identical zoom when the books themselves differ.

Books behind other books need separate photographs

A camera can only search text it can see. If a front row covers a back row, photograph the visible front row, then move it temporarily and photograph the books behind it if those titles also need to be searchable.

The same applies to horizontal stacks that obscure spine text. A searchable photograph is an index of what the camera could see at capture time.

Update the sections that actually changed

A Library Mode collection does not require a ceremonial annual reshoot.

If one case remains stable for three years, its photographs can remain useful for three years. If another shelf is constantly being rearranged, update that shelf when the old visual location starts creating false leads.

The maintenance unit should be the changed shelf section, not the whole library. Smaller shelf-section images can be replaced independently.

A practical starting rule

Start by photographing one ordinary shelf in two or three sections. Test several titles. Then adjust.

That one shelf will teach you more about your camera, lighting, book sizes, and furniture than a generic recommendation can. Once you find a framing that reliably reads the smallest ordinary spines while preserving location context, repeat it through the rest of the collection.

The target is not the fewest possible photos. It is the smallest visual library that still lets search do its job.
