Dactylic hexameter is the verse form of Homeric epic: six metrical units built primarily from long and short syllables.
That definition sounds tidy. The difficulty begins when an English reader hears the word dactyl and assumes the meter works like an English stress pattern such as DA-da-da.
Greek meter is not fundamentally counting stressed and unstressed syllables. It is quantitative. It distinguishes syllables by length.
The basic shape
A dactylic foot has one long syllable followed by two short syllables: — ⏑ ⏑. In epic hexameter, many of those dactyls can be replaced by spondees, — —. The line contains six measures, with a shortened final measure.
Gregory Nagy's discussion of Homeric language and meter at the Center for Hellenic Studies gives the technical pattern as six consecutive units shaped principally as — ⏑ ⏑ or — —, with the sixth unit truncated.
This makes the line flexible without making it formless. A run of dactyls can move quickly. More spondees can make a passage feel heavier. Word boundaries and pauses interact with the metrical pattern. The line has room for variation while remaining recognizably itself.
Why meter matters to Homeric style
The meter is not a decorative frame attached after the words were chosen.
As Milman Parry's work on formulaic diction helped demonstrate, traditional phrases and metrical structure are deeply entangled. Names, epithets, speech introductions, actions, and recurring phrases come in shapes that fit useful places in the verse. The traditional poetic language and the meter developed together.
This is why the familiar repetition of Homer cannot be cleanly separated from the form of the line. A phrase survives not only because it conveys a useful idea, but because it can perform a useful metrical job.
Nagy puts the point strongly: Homeric hexameter should not be imagined simply as an empty rhythm into which a poet pours words. Its formulaic language has rhythms built into it. The Center for Hellenic Studies discusses that relationship here.
Then English causes trouble
English verse normally makes much more use of stress. English speakers naturally hear differences between stronger and weaker beats, while vowel length does not organize ordinary English speech the way syllable quantity organizes ancient Greek meter.
So an English translator who says, “I will preserve Homer's meter,” has already accepted a problem. One can approximate dactylic hexameter with stressed and unstressed English syllables, but the result is not the same system transferred intact. It is an English analogue.
The Poetry Foundation's entry on hexameter points to Longfellow's Evangeline as a famous English experiment in dactylic hexameter. The effect is unmistakable. It is also unmistakably unusual English verse.
That unusualness can be valuable. It can give a reader some sense that epic moves in a long, rolling line rather than in the compact measures most familiar from English poetry. But it can also make Homer sound more ceremonially foreign than the Greek may have sounded to an audience fluent in its poetic tradition.
Translators can preserve different things
There is no solution that preserves every feature at once.
Samuel Butler uses prose. His Iliad was explicitly published as the poem “rendered into English prose.” Perseus preserves the edition information here. Butler gives up the Greek line as a formal unit in exchange for speed and syntactic clarity. He even explains in his preface that prose changes what can comfortably be repeated.
Alexander Pope makes Homer into eighteenth-century English verse. His rhymed heroic couplets give the poem a powerful English literary form, but not Homer's meter. Pope's music is part of what makes Pope worth reading. It is also unmistakably Pope.
George Chapman chooses still another English sound. His Iliad is famous for long, strongly propelled English lines. Again, the point is not metrical identity with Greek. It is the construction of a convincing English epic voice.
A translator can instead attempt English dactylic hexameter, but that choice sacrifices other things: idiomatic ease, compression, familiar English cadence, or sometimes precision of wording.
This is why “faithful” needs an object
When someone calls a translation faithful, the useful follow-up is: faithful to what?
To the sequence of ideas? To syntax? To lineation? To repeated formulas? To the speed of the story? To the dignity or plainness of the diction? To the meter? To the experience of hearing a long narrative poem?
A translation can move closer to one of these and farther from another.
Meter makes the problem unusually visible because it cannot be carried into English without some transformation. Even a translator who preserves six-beat dactylic-looking lines is translating a quantitative system into a stress-based language.
What should a first reader listen for?
If you are reading Homer in English, you do not need to scan every Greek line. It is enough to know that the original has a persistent long-line rhythm and that formulaic phrases live partly inside that rhythm.
Then notice what your translation substitutes for it.
Does the English move as prose? Does it rhyme? Does it use a conspicuous beat? Are repeated phrases preserved or smoothed away? Does the poem feel swift, stately, plain, ornate, rough, or polished?
Those are not merely questions about translator personality. They are different answers to the problem created by the Greek meter.
Dactylic hexameter is therefore useful even to a reader who never learns to scan it. It explains why no English Homer can simply be Homer with the words exchanged.
