Wi-Fi channel numbers are easier to understand when you can see several nearby networks laid across the same band.

Curious Air's Wi-Fi screen turns Android's scan results into that view.

Open Wi-Fi and allow the required permission

Open Wi-Fi in Curious Air.

Android requires location-related permission for Wi-Fi scanning, so Curious Air will ask for it if it has not already been granted. Once permission is available, the screen begins scanning for nearby Wi-Fi access points reported by Android.

The count at the top tells you how many access-point results are currently in the view.

Choose the band you want to inspect

Curious Air groups the results into the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands when those bands are present.

If networks are visible in more than one band, a selector appears. Curious Air initially focuses on the band with the most detected networks, but you can switch to another one.

The horizontal axis is labeled for the selected band. On 2.4 GHz, for example, you will see familiar channel references such as 1, 6, and 11.

Read each trace as a discovered access point

Each colored trace represents a Wi-Fi access point from the current Android scan results.

Its horizontal position corresponds to the reported center channel. Its width reflects the channel width Android reports for that access point. Its height follows signal strength in dBm: a reading around -40 dBm plots much higher than one around -80 dBm.

Tap a trace or a network in the list below. Curious Air's selected-network card shows the channel, current signal level, channel width, security information, and recent signal history when enough samples are available.

Look for shared frequency space, not a verdict called “congestion”

When several traces occupy the same part of the graph, the discovered networks are using overlapping frequency space.

That is useful information. It is not, by itself, proof that those networks are interfering badly, that one router is misconfigured, or that your internet connection will be slow.

A Wi-Fi scan reports nearby access points and their advertised operating information. It is not a raw laboratory spectrum measurement, and channel occupancy is only one part of wireless performance.

Refresh when you want a new scan

Use the refresh control to request another scan. Curious Air also lets you hold the current display so a changing list does not move underneath you while you inspect it.

Walk to another room and the visible set and signal levels may change. That can be useful for understanding what your phone can see from different locations, as long as you keep the claim modest: these are the Wi-Fi access points Android reported to this phone at this place and time.
